Periodontal Disease
The word periodontal means “around the tooth”. Periodontal disease attacks the gums and the bone that support the teeth. Plaque is a sticky film of food debris, bacteria, and saliva. If plaque is not removed, it turns into calculus (tartar). When plaque and calculus are not removed, they begin to destroy the gums and bone. Periodontal disease is characterized by red, swollen, and bleeding gums.
Four out of five people have periodontal disease and don’t know it! Most people are not aware of it because the disease is usually painless in the early stages.
Not only is it the number one reason for tooth loss, research suggests that there may be a link between periodontal disease and other diseases such as, stroke, bacterial pneumonia, diabetes, cardiovascular disease, and increased risk during pregnancy. Researchers are determining if inflammation and bacteria associated with periodontal disease affects these systemic diseases and conditions. Smoking also increases the risk of periodontal disease.
Good oral hygiene, a balanced diet, and regular dental visits can help reduce your risk of developing periodontal disease.

Testimonials
"My wife and I went here for the first time today and from the front desk ladies, the dental hygienists, to Doctor Barnes everyone was incredible. They seemed so interested in what we had to say and made us feel so welcome. We are so excited to have a new awesome office to go to! Highly recommended!"
"I've been visiting Highland Dental Center for the last few years along with my entire family, and it's been great. The staff is helpful, knowledgeable, and pleasant. The location is convenient (I live around downtown Salt Lake City), and they've been very patient and effective with our small children."
"I had the best experience with this dental office, the front ofice is nice and knowledgeable, the assistants greeted me by name, the doctor explained things well and then let me help in setting up my dental work in order. I felt very comfortable with him and all the other staff! I would go see them anytime!!!! Best ever and easy to get in for appointments!"
